from John:
The whole issue of Israel, (Palestine, creation, mutual rights to exist, settlers, right of return) is so fraught with unsettling expectations that it may be a roadmap to the "settlement" of left v. right, class division, Rep. v Dem, one percenter v. 99 percenter issues. Meaning: there's no way to get there. Not even war, unless one side entirely wipes out the other. Since we apparently can't resolve our internal differences, all the while expecting things to get better, how can we expect the middle east to do any better? My family, basically Irish-American, isn't as depressed as I am about the future of this country or of Israel, maybe because they haven't been in Israel or traveled thru the middle east or lived much of their US life in largely Jewish communities.
